Cattle traders in Karamoja have been told to acquire trade licenses within one month or face arrest and prosecution

The announcement was made by the joint security forces in Karamoja on Monday in a meeting at the Mount Moroto Region Police headquarters

The move comes as part of efforts to combat livestock thefts and regulate the cattle trade business in Karamoja

"Cattle traders must acquire livestock trading licenses within one month, effective from April 29, to operate smoothly and avoid interference from security forces," said Elias Kasirabo, the Police Anti Stock Theft Unit commander.

The deputy commander of the UPDF 3rd division, Brig Felix Busizoori emphasized the need for traders to regularize their business to distinguish legitimate traders from "cattle hawkers" who facilitate cattle raids.

"Measures have been put in place to regulate the cattle trade, including the requirement for traceability documents and the use of gazetted routes for transportation," Brig Busizoori said.

The joint communique issued by cattle traders and commanders outlined strict guidelines, including the requirement for traceability documents, regulated transportation, and the avoidance of extortion and bribery at checkpoints.

"Cattle traders must comply with these guidelines to combat livestock thefts and promote a smooth cattle trade business," Police said.
